So I saw my first snow before February yesterday. Every relative I had below the Mason-Dixon line called me and asked if I was in line “at the Wal-Mark’s stockin’ up for the blizzard.” And honestly, yes, the thought crossed my mind. Maybe even more than once.
It’s exciting for me to get familiar with a new climate, albeit the cold end of the climate at this point. The Blue House is endearingly chilly, yet delightfully cozy, with everyone bundled up while working away. I like it in a way. More excuses to drink hot chocolate.
My car on the other hand does not like the weather. Every morning Nadine, my little car, whines and moans. You can tell she thinks that it isn’t time to be this cold. It’s not time to scrape the windshields. She huffs and puffs as I turn the key, trying to get her engine going. I don’t know much about weatherizing an older vehicle, but I bet the List can give me a few ideas to ease Nadine’s creaky sprockets on future — even colder — Indy mornings.

Good grief. It felt like it was at least 90 degrees this weekend. And it’s October. Where are my crisp autumn days?
Actually, I should bite my tongue. I’m sure the cool, windy, rainy weather will be here before I know it. I just wasn’t expecting the July-like temperatures while I was out and about this weekend. My poor car’s air conditioner usually gets a much-needed break this time of year, but not lately. And I refuse to turn the house air conditioner back on, much to the chagrin of my family. But they’ll be OK. I just keep the curtains closed to block out the sun and the windows wide open to welcome any sort of breeze. I mean, it’s October. No A/C in October. I truly enjoy this time of year. Some may lament at summer’s passing, but I’m fine with saying ‘goodbye’ to 90-degree weather and Saturdays spent indoors with the shades drawn. It’s just too hot. And, as I glance down at my decidedly pale legs, I’m reminded that the sun and I aren’t BFFs. I’ve spent the past three months dodging its cancer-causing rays and wondering how people can tolerate living in the tropics! But as my corner of the world slowly starts to tilt and the sun becomes “less hot,” I find my weekends are quickly filling up with outdoor activities. You’d think after living in central Indiana my entire life I’d be used to our weather. But it never fails to surprise me with tornadoes, thunderstorms, destroyed power lines and overflowing basements.
As Kristy indicated, Indianapolis has recently experienced some bad weather. Last weekend, I came home to knee-high sewage that had backed up into my basement. Continue reading ‘Bad weather bothering you? Not me…’

Friday night (May 30) Indianapolis was hit by a tornado. Luckily our Angie’s List offices are still standing, but 430 people were left without homes in the city. I’ll consider myself lucky since less than 20 blocks away from my house the wind tore off roofs from homes and businesses. Continue reading ‘Living without electricity’

Finally, warm weather has arrived. (Well, kind of. We hit freezing temperatures in Indy last night after enjoying a week of 70-plus degrees.) After spending all winter getting my house spruced up on the inside, I’m ready to dig out the gardening supplies and get to work on further improving my home’s value. At the top of my list of outdoor home improvements is the demolition of a hideous red deck the previous homeowner haphazardly installed. It’s gigantic and eats up nearly half of my already small yard. That, and it sits way off the ground, allowing my neighbors a full view over my fence (which is painted a matching hideous red, of course). Continue reading ‘Pave the way…’
