My house was the talk of the block for a few weeks recently. So much so that we ended up meeting half of the people in our neighborhood for the first time.
I’m almost 100 percent positive they weren’t interested in meeting us; they were just scoping out their new competition for next year’s neighborhood landscaping contest.
That’s right, it took six months, but my landscaping in my front yard is finally complete (see one of my first Blue House Blog entries from April: “Living with a professional landscaper”). Thanks to my fiancé, we’re the envy of the neighborhood. We have the most up-to-date plants and shrubs; a lush, green yard; a brand new, winding paver sidewalk that leads from our driveway to the front door; a trimmed tree; and new shutters, house numbers and mailbox.
It’s amazing what a little work can do to make your house stand out. Even the neighbor’s grown son stopped by the other day to comment on how nice it looked and said we were the talk at his mom’s latest cookout. He said the seniors are making bets we’re going to win first place in next year’s contest.
I know we have it in the bag, but for the neighborhood’s sake, I’d love to see some more competition.
