My husband and I hosted a dinner for some family friends last night. It was the first time they’ve been to our home, so I wanted everything to be perfect. I got home a little late, so I had to run around the house to make quick adjustments and final swipes with the dusting rag. No candlestick could be out of place, no dog slobber dripping down the walls.
When our guests arrived, we gave them the tour and they seemed rather impressed with all the work we’ve done. We always beam with pride and joy when people see our recently remodeled master bedroom suite (this time was no different).
Once the tour was complete, I finished preparing the meal. Luckily it was rather easy and everyone complimented my cooking skills. I thought, “This hosting stuff is easy!”
After dinner, I was exhausted and ready to turn in for the night. But my spunky guests weren’t ready to end the evening. It was strange to feel like I was being out-done by a couple of retired folks. They brought Mexican Train Dominoes with them and suggested we play. I had never played dominoes before and really enjoyed myself, but as the hours waned, I kept wondering when it was time to go to bed. Much to my surprise, my lovely guests didn’t leave until after 11p.m., and being an obsessive cleaner, I couldn’t go to bed until all the dishes were cleaned and put away. Don’t get me wrong. I had a great time.
It just got me thinking: I bet if we canceled our cable and internet service, we could occasionally afford to hire a professional cleaning service and caterer. So, next time I host a dinner party I’ll be consulting the List. Then I won’t have to look so old and lame to my retiree friends.
