I’m not married yet, but I received my first ultimatum a couple months ago. My fiancée said, “Finish remodeling the house before I move in, or else…” I’m not sure what “or else” means, but at this point in our relationship I’m not sure I’m ready to find out.
In her defense, this remodeling project has been going on for a while. When I bought my house I thought it was near move-in ready. As soon as I settled in, however, I found all sorts of things I wanted to change. It started with painting the living room, and once I got started it just kept snowballing. I’ve now painted the living room, dining room, hallway, bathroom and both bedrooms. When I finished painting, I started replacing the 50’s style trim around the windows and doors, followed by the baseboards. Luckily, I think that’s it. Once I finish the baseboards and add some nice shoe molding, I’ll be done. Hopefully, just in time for the wedding…and only two years after I started.
My fiancée has been a huge help through out the process, trimming, nailing and painting her way deeper into my heart. Now with the end in sight, she’s offering up suggestions instead of ultimatums. The best of which is, “next time we should hire someone to do this stuff.”
