Credit card pushers

Credit cardSpending five hours at the mall isn’t how I’d spend the typical Saturday, but this past weekend I was on a mission: Buy summer clothes for my upcoming trip to Mexico.

After two stores, I was doing quite well. I found a dress for my friend’s destination wedding at a reasonable price. Before I handed my debit card to the lady, she asked: “Would you like to save an additional 20 percent?” “No thanks,” I responded. I knew she would be onto the next spiel: “All you have to do is open a credit card with us today.”

Twenty stores and five purchases later, I was getting downright frustrated with those ladies behind the counters. No wonder people are foreclosing on their homes left and right, with so many credit card pushers and shoppers who can’t say no to a bargain. I’m not sure if people realize a 20-percent savings now means 23 percent in interest on those purchases later. You don’t have to be a financial advisor to figure that one out; just read the fine print.

Last year, my excuse to the store clerks was that I was purchasing a home and didn’t want to ruin my credit. Now, my excuse is I’d rather have good credit and not risk the chance of losing my home to the bank.
