I love October — it’s the best time of year. Here in Indiana the leaves start to change and the weather becomes mild. Across the nation, the NFL gets into full swing, the NBA season starts, the MLB post-season begins and we celebrate one of my favorite holidays, Halloween.
I love the horror movies on AMC and TCM, the haunted houses, fake cobwebs, witch costumes and Jack-O’-Lanterns.
Originating in Europe, Jack-O’-Lanterns were first carved from rutabagas and turnips. The name evolved from the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy old farmer who liked to drink and gamble. Mr. Stingy J trapped the devil up in a tree by carving a cross into the tree trunk. Continue reading ‘I love October’

Back to the Future, he loves playing basketball and his favorite place is his couch.
I’ve always thought the List should expand its number of rated service categories. But apparently, our IT Department has been doing that for years now (I guess I need to pay more attention.) Still, though, I fear some service companies will never have a chance to receive an “A” rating.
That’s why I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for one of the most underappreciated services: movie theaters. Continue reading ‘Movie theaters are service companies, too’
As editorial intern, Mike writes the monthly employee page, edits content and talks to service providers for the Comparative Shopper column in
Angie's List magazine. His favorite place is the Appalachian Trail (except for the areas that have bears, snakes or birds). His favorite album is "London Calling" by the Clash.
I truly enjoy this time of year. Some may lament at summer’s passing, but I’m fine with saying ‘goodbye’ to 90-degree weather and Saturdays spent indoors with the shades drawn. It’s just too hot. And, as I glance down at my decidedly pale legs, I’m reminded that the sun and I aren’t BFFs. I’ve spent the past three months dodging its cancer-causing rays and wondering how people can tolerate living in the tropics! But as my corner of the world slowly starts to tilt and the sun becomes “less hot,” I find my weekends are quickly filling up with outdoor activities. After reading my blog post about dance classes from a few weeks ago, a dear friend of mine in Idaho called to remind me of my signature dance move: The Raptor.
Astaire had his waltz. MC Hammer, his “Hammertime” jig. Me? I have The Raptor. Continue reading ‘Carnivore of the dance floor: The Raptor dance’
Matthew is the senior editor for local affairs at
Angie’s List magazine. When he’s not at the Blue House, he enjoys reading and writing fiction, playing guitar and riding his bicycle.
I had my re-wedding this past Saturday with my husband John, and the weekend’s festivities were almost everything I had hoped for in my wedding. The only thing missing was John’s family. We had amazing photographers, though, so everything was well documented (which is a bit scary, as they were partying well into the evening with us.)
The whole evening went perfectly, though— from our short 10-minute ceremony in my parents’ backyard to the reception. My parents picked the reception’s location: the car gallery in the Stutz building, which gave the evening an interesting feel. Continue reading ‘Wedding Number Two? Success.’
