Renting a truck and moving West

Moving truckMy husband John and I are preparing to move across the country to Colorado. While we would love to hire a moving company to pack all of our stuff in neat little packages, carefully load them onto a truck and meet us at our destination — where I’ll be sitting in a chair, martini in hand, merrily pointing to where I’d like them to place each box — we just don’t have the money for it. And then there was television…

Last week, after a year without TV — it wasn’t a protest against modernity, just an attempt to save a bit of money — my husband, John, and I paid to have our cable hooked up, bringing us up to speed with the rest of the civilized world… sort of.

old televisionOur fifteen-year-old television is a mockery to modern technology — an obese and awkward ancestor of the new supermodel generation. Continue reading ‘And then there was television…’

Wedding Number Two? Success.

I had my re-wedding this past Saturday with my husband John, and the weekend’s festivities were almost everything I had hoped for in my wedding. The only thing missing was John’s family. We had amazing photographers, though, so everything was well documented (which is a bit scary, as they were partying well into the evening with us.)

old carThe whole evening went perfectly, though— from our short 10-minute ceremony in my parents’ backyard to the reception. My parents picked the reception’s location: the car gallery in the Stutz building, which gave the evening an interesting feel. Continue reading ‘Wedding Number Two? Success.’

Going to the chapel, and I’m gonna get married…again…

So, I’m planning my re-wedding. Yes, I’m getting married twice to the same guy, and no, there wasn’t any kind of confusion of sexual orientation that annulled the first wedding, in case you were wondering. Nope, my first wedding was of the shotgun variety, sans baby — we had immigration hoops to jump through so my husband could escape the captivity of our rental home and enter the American work force, which required us to get married in a hasty fashion. Money Talks…

If money management is a sport in which we’re all players, then I’m like some limp-wristed bench warmer in an oversized Michael Jordan jersey continually lobbing free throws at the wrong end of the court. I’ve never been good at keeping my finances straight; it’s been a long history of overdraft charges and living paycheck-to-paycheck ever since I’ve been old enough to hold a job. And while eleven years is enough time for most people to get a handle on the simple idea of debits and credits, my learning curve seems to be bending in the wrong direction. A stealthy ride to greener living…

Spurred by the torrential rainstorms that have recently plagued Indiana and the number of responses we’ve received from Angie’s List members concerning our Green Living Issue — both positive and negative — I’ve been giving global warming some thought…

I’ve decided that, regardless of which side of the global warming camp you’re on, or if you’re camping at all, there should be no denying that something is causing the earth’s weather patterns to go absolutely haywire. Continue reading ‘A stealthy ride to greener living…’

Puppy Surprise

ClioAbout two months ago, a couple of colleagues and I spotted a stray dog roving the campus of Angie’s List, and in a matter of minutes she’d been rounded up and was gleefully wandering the Blue House, going from editor to ad designer and back again, being fawned over and adored. I decided she was going home with me and, about an hour later, when she was walking up the front steps to my house, my husband wasn’t in the least bit shocked that the “surprise” I said I had in store for him was a dog.
